Research that solves problems in the real world

The ÉTS faculty centres its work on the big issues for society. ÉTS research professors have cultivated special relationships with all kinds of organizations and industry partners to come up with applied research projects at both the master’s and doctoral levels. Students can thus develop hands-on skills for solving the problems faced by Canadian businesses.

State-of-the-art equipment

ÉTS research laboratories have a full array of state-of-the-art equipment. Here are some examples:

  • One of the very few atomic force–type scanning probe microscopes out there, acquired through a major investment by Canada Economic Development. It was the first of its kind in Canada and is capable of characterizing materials in the amorphous metal alloys family.
  • An Yxlon FF35 tomograph recently acquired by the ÉTS multiscale industrial tomography centre under a technology showcase agreement with Object Research Systems, a member of Comet Group. X-ray microtomography is a nondestructive imaging technique that reconstructs the volume of an object from a series of 2D X-rays.
  • A Ceradrop X-series industrial inkjet printer, acquired a few years ago to study the scale-up of manufacturing processes (i.e., to transition processes from the lab to something close to industrial manufacturing), with a view to producing better optoelectronic devices more affordably.
