More than 60% of the research laboratories, groups and chairs at ÉTS are involved in research activities linked to the environment and social responsibility.
Renewable energy, sustainable mobility, wind energy, electric vehicles, energy efficiency, environmental management, sustainable construction and impact studies are among the areas of expertise of ÉTS professors-researchers.

Fonds de recherche ÉTS sur les changements climatiques (FRECC) (ÉTS research fund for climate change)
Created within the context of the carbon neutrality strategy at ÉTS, the goal of the FRECC is to stimulate research that contributes to the fight against climate change by supporting projects aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions. It is financed by contributions from ÉTS, donations from Planetair taken from the sale of the Planetair+ÉTS carbon offset product and contributions from donors.
Calls for projects are issued by the FRECC at least once per year, in June, and candidates are selected by a committee comprising expert scientists from within and outside of ÉTS.
Centre d'études et de recherches intersectorielles en économie circulaire (CERIEC) (Center for intersectoral studies and research on the circular economy)
CERIEC’s mission is to contribute to the shaping and deployment of the circular economy through a program of cutting-edge interdisciplinary scientific research and through training, dialogue, valorization and transfer initiatives designed to maximize benefits for economic actors, governments and civil society.
CERIEC intends to become the singular reference for the circular economy in Québec in terms of knowledge, skills and value creation. Located at ÉTS, it provides an important experimentation space for researchers and engineering students, particularly in the area of innovations designed to facilitate the transition to a sustainable future.
Centre interdisciplinaire de recherche en opérationnalisation du développement durable (CIRODD) (Interdisciplinary research centre in the operationalization of sustainable development)
Arising from the Fonds de recherche du Québec – Nature et technologie (FRQNT) and Société et culture (FRQSC), CIRODD is the first sustainable development strategic group in Québec. ÉTS boasts fifteen researchers associated with CIRODD.
CIRODD is a research, development and reference centre in the operationalization of sustainable development. Its mission is to accelerate the transformation of society in order to support the socio-environmental transition through sustainable innovation and transdisciplinarity. It has adopted ambitious trans- and interdisciplinary objectives that generate unprecedented synergies among researchers from various disciplines.
Engineering plays a central role in ensuring sustainable development. The construction of infrastructure assets that are resilient to climate change, the design of efficient systems that guarantee fairer and more equitable access to resources and the development of technologies that help to improve health across all facets of society are among the concrete contributions made by research conducted at ÉTS.
