How Do I Register?

Congratulations on being accepted to ÉTS!

You’ve chosen a school that focuses on tackling today’s big issues. All of our programs dedicate more time to hands-on work, lab sessions, and projects than any other university-level engineering program in Québec.

To accept your offer of admission, all you need to do is register for your first-semester courses.

ADMISSION AND REGISTRATION: WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

  • Admission* means you’ve met the necessary criteria to study in your chosen program. You can be admitted unconditionally or subject to certain conditions.
  • Registration refers to your course selection. That is the stage after admission. It is your responsibility to register for courses each semester, within the dates indicated in the academic calendar.

*Haven’t applied for admission yet? Follow the four steps to submit your application.

Registration, step by step

At ÉTS you have a lot of freedom in choosing your courses and schedule. However, this flexibility comes with the responsibility of planning your studies with the help of the tools on the ÉTS website:

You must register within the dates indicated on the academic calendar. Check the calendar to find out when to register and to avoid a surcharge for late registration.

Courses fill up quickly! Space per section is limited, so creating your schedule early on gives you a bigger choice of sections and time slots.

Registration - Technological Academic Path

Registration for students admitted to courses in the Technological Academic Path is done by the department. You don’t have to choose courses, but you should follow these two steps to select your track:

STEP 1: Create a MonÉTS account

If you haven’t created your ÉTS account yet, follow these steps:

  • Log in to Omnivox and open your admission decision.
  • Click on the link in the admission decision.
  • Create a MonÉTS account and choose a password.
  • Log in to the MonÉTS portal.
  • Click on “Cheminement universitaire en technologie” (Technological Academic Path) in the left menu.
  • Select “Répondre à l’offre d’admission” (Respond to admission offer).
  • Select “Confirmer mon choix” (Confirm my choice).

You will receive an email when your schedule is available. This may take a few days or weeks, so don’t worry.

Registration - Bachelor's

If you haven’t created your ÉTS account yet, follow these steps:

  • Log in to Omnivox and open your admission decision.
  • Click on the link in the admission decision.
  • Create a MonÉTS account and choose a password (you will need it to log in to ChemiNot)

Students enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program, with the exception of those who took the Foundation Year in Technology, must take one or more placement tests.

To find out which tests you need to take and then complete those tests, you need to log in to the placement tests application

If you don’t have any tests to complete, go to step 3 of the registration process.

The placement tests are not eligibility tests. They’re simply used to assess your knowledge of mathematics, science, and/or computer science to determine the path that best suits you. The tests required depend on your program of study.

Your result (pass or fail) will be indicated in the Application Results section once you have completed your placement tests. For each subject, your result will determine whether you need to take the regular or upgrade course.

Once you’ve completed all your placement tests, you’ll get access to ChemiNot, the course registration tool.

Visit the placement tests page (in French) to learn more about the various tests.

Having technical issues with your placement test application? Please submit a service request to IT support by completing the web form or by contacting the team at 514-396-8800 ext. 7979.

Typical programs

Programs typically consist of 4–5 courses per semester. Below you will find a list of suggested courses to complete your bachelor’s degree in 10 or 11 semesters, including the three workplace internships:

Course selection

At ÉTS, you can study full time or part time, and you can choose from one to five courses per semester. Full-time registration requires a minimum of 12 credits per semester. During regular program semesters, international students are required to register as full-time students.

To begin course selection, see the “Inscription (Registration)” tab.

Course selection is straightforward for the first semester. Simply choose from the courses in the first column on the left.

Placement tests

Depending on your results (pass or fail) from the placement tests you completed in step 2, you may register for either the regular math course, MAT145, or the upgrade course, MAT144. The same principle applies for the LOG100 course. If you don’t pass the placement test, you’ll need to enroll in the upgrade course, INF111.

Choosing a section

Some courses have several sections. You can choose the section that works best for you.

When you click on the course abbreviation, you’ll see all the sections offered for this course. Use the arrow to see the complete list.

Once you’ve chosen a section, click Ajouter (Add)”. The course will appear in your schedule.

Note: The number of spots in each section is limited. We strongly recommend choosing your courses early on in the registration period.

Once your course selection is complete, click Quitter (Exit)” to confirm.

You have until the end of the registration period to change your course selections. See the academic calendar for the key dates.

Frequently asked questions

Credits are units that represent the required workload to achieve the objectives of a course or educational activity. On average, a 3-credit course represents 45 hours of time in the classroom or lab or doing practical work and 90 hours of individual study or work per semester.

A university course is usually offered for three or four credits. However, certain activities and workshops, such as ATE800, that all graduate students must complete in their first semester are not for credit.

Your individual workload may vary during the semester. For example, you may have more work in the run up to exams and not as much in the first few weeks of the semester.

For intensive courses, the workload, the window for changing or dropping courses, and the exam schedule will differ. See the course plan for specific dates.

International student community

The cost of studying in Québec varies according to the level of study, but also according to the number of credits you register for. You’ll receive a new billing statement for each semester when you register for courses.

Your student status is the pace at which you progress in a program, either full time or part time. Some programs, such as a master’s degree with thesis (M.Sc. A) and doctoral (Ph.D) programs, must be taken full time, while others are offered only part time. These include short programs and most certificates.

To be considered full time, students must register for:

  • at least 12 credits (undergraduate level), or
  • at least 9 credits (graduate level)*

Internship semesters for undergraduates and students in a master’s program with a project (M.Eng.) are always considered full-time semesters.

*Full-time status is maintained with fewer than nine credits when, at the end of the course, the student is registered for “ACTIVIT” or “REDACT” or is in an extended semester. To learn more, visit Registration for Graduate Programs or contact your department

International student community

In accordance with immigration regulations, international students in Québec are required to make studying their main activity. This means you must register as a full-time student each semester of your program (except the final semester) and you must make satisfactory progress. To learn more, see the conditions for your study permit on the Immigration Canada website.

You can make changes to your schedule until the end of the registration period. After that, you can also change your course selection without an extra fee during the period for course changes with refund. See the dates in the academic calendar.

To make a change to your schedule, you simply need to go back to ChemiNot and select the course(s) you would like to remove or change. Important: If you delete a course, your spot automatically becomes available and can be taken by someone else. Keep in mind that the number of places in each class is limited.

If you decide to add a course towards the end of the change period and after the start of the semester, make sure you can realistically catch up.

Between weeks three and ten, you can drop a course without a fail on your transcript, but you will be charged. If you withdraw after that, your grade will be a fail (or your cumulative grade up to that point).

For intensive courses, see the course outline for specific dates that differ from those of regular courses.

International student community

Dropping courses could have long-term consequences for your immigration status. Contact the International Relations team to assess your options and the impact on your legal status.

Also note that dropping a course during the period for changes without refund does not affect your student status, as opposed to withdrawing during the period with refund.

Even if you don’t have all your immigration paperwork yet, it’s advisable to register as soon as possible once the registration period opens. If you have to defer or withdraw, your registration will be cancelled automatically and without a fee.

Students enrolled in a graduate program at ÉTS may, under certain conditions, take up to two courses (six credits) at other universities through the interuniversity agreement administered by Bureau de la coopération interuniversitaire (BCI). You can take up to three courses (nine credits) for master’s programs in English. For additional courses, you need approval from your program administrator.

Take the following into account if you want to take courses elsewhere as part of your program of study:

  • For remote learning, please note that only courses that include exams are permitted as transfer courses. Pay close attention to how your progress will be assessed.
  • Registration period: You can apply to register for a course as a transfer student once the ÉTS registration period opens and until the end of the period for changing registration at ÉTS. If you submit your application before the registration period, it may be put on hold, although the school you are applying to is free to accept or reject applications based on its own academic calendar.

Note – You will need to follow the academic calendar of the host institution with respect to deadlines for admission, requests for cancellation (with refund) or withdrawal (without refund, without a fail grade).

The course you are interested in might be full. Check availability with the host institution.

For more information, visit the section of the Bureau de coopération interuniversitaire website that deals with authorization to transfer credits or contact ententes@etsmtl.ca
