At ÉTS, research in mechanical engineering touches on a wide range of application domains such as health care, workplace safety, the environment, the manufacturing sector and aeronautics. In this master's program, you will come into contact with professors who design devices to reduce the incidence of spinal cord injury, create biofuels with specific properties, develop protective equipment for factory workers and seek to improve the aerodynamics of wind turbines in Nordic environments. These are all projects of great concern to both public and private organizations.
What will you learn in the Master’s program?
In this ÉTS graduate program, you can specialize in aeronautical design, mechanical manufacturing, the mechanics of buildings, health technologies, or in mechanical or manufacturing systems.
In addition, you will deepen your knowledge in the following areas:
- Aerodynamics of wind turbines;
- Thermofluids and energy;
- Finite element stress analysis;
- Aeronautical design;
- Shape-memory alloys;
- Intelligent systems;
- Composite materials;
- Smart functional materials;
- Polymers and plastics processing;
- Acoustics and ultrasound;
- Non-destructive testing, fracture mechanics and failure analysis;
- Advanced manufacturing.
You will also have access to highly specialized equipment, because ÉTS has more than 15 Chairs and research units in mechanical engineering. In addition, many researchers work closely with specialized health research centres such as the Centre de recherche du Centre hospitalier universitaire de Montréal (CRCHUM – the University of Montréal’s health care research centre), the research centre of the Sacré-Cœur de Montréal hospital (site in French) and the Sainte-Justine children's hospital university research centre.
What’s the Difference between the Project Profile and the Research Profile?
Our master's program in mechanical engineering includes two profiles: one with thesis and the other with project. The thesis profile is focused on research and leads to the degree of Master of Applied Science (M.A.Sc.). The project profile will allow you to specialize in a particular area of mechanical engineering and will lead to the degree of Master in Engineering (M. Eng.).
What Degrees Provide Admission to the Master’s in Mechanical Engineering?
Holders of an engineering diploma or a bachelor degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, automated production engineering, manufacturing engineering, industrial engineering or a related field may enroll in the Master in Mechanical Engineering.
Master's in mechanical engineering with thesis (research profile)
This profile is for you if you want to continue into doctoral studies or do research and development in industry.
The research project counts for 30 of the 45 credits of this program.
Master's in mechanical engineering with project (project profile)
The practical and theoretical courses in the project profile will help you deepen your knowledge and specialize in one of the many areas of mechanical engineering.
The program totals 45 credits, including 30 to 39 credits of courses plus 6 to 15 credits for the project.
Master of Applied Science (M.A.Sc.)
The Master's program enables engineers and other professionals to specialize in mechanical engineering and to become proficient in technology transfer related to the industry. In this program, students acquire advanced knowledge in mechanical engineering and develop the skills required to identify the technological requirements of specific companies. They also learn to define, justify, plan and complete an implementation project involving existing technology or applied research or development projects in the field of mechanical engineering.
Hold a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in mechanical engineering,electrical engineering, automated manufacturing engineering, manufacturing engineering, industrial engineering or a related field, with a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 (out of 4.3) or equivalent;
or have acquired the required knowledge, appropriate training and experience that is deemed to be relevant.
A candidate who is deemed to be inadequately prepared may be required to take upgrading courses or a preparatory course.
The candidate can be admitted on the basis of sufficient knowledge of English. In addition to the requirements of the program, the candidate must also successfully complete an out-of-program French course, appropriate to his or her level, to obtain a diploma.
Candidates admitted on the basis of English must also provide proof that a faculty member has agreed to act as their thesis supervisor.

- 3 or 4 optional activities (totalling at least 12 credits)

What are the Career Prospects in Mechanical Engineering?
As mechanical engineering covers many domains, you will be able to work in virtually any industry.
Here are a few positions held by graduates with an ÉTS Master of Mechanical Engineering:
- R&D engineer in the design of a fully implantable artificial heart;
- Manager of haptic interface development projects;
- Finite elements simulation engineer;
- Manager of non-destructive testing projects;
- Mechanical engineer in the development of biomedical technologies;
Some masters’ graduates, notably those with an M.A.Sc., choose to continue into doctoral studies or make a career within a university or a college, specifically in research and development.
With a master's in engineering, you also have excellent salary prospects. According to the Survey on the Remuneration of Engineering Professionals in Québec (in French), conducted by Génium360, graduates with a Master of Engineering earn, on average, 10% more than bachelor graduates.
