ETS expertise in quantum computing featured in Scientific American

Professor Jacob Biamonte, Director of the Quantum Institute at ÉTS and an internationally recognized expert in quantum computing, was recently featured in a Scientific American article exploring the future of quantum computing. Scientific American is one of the world’s leading science communication publications.

The article examines both the promises and the limitations of quantum computers. While progress in the field is advancing rapidly, many experts note that large-scale practical applications remain years, if not decades, away.

In the feature, Professor Biamonte offers a nuanced perspective on the potential of quantum artificial intelligence. While acknowledging the current excitement surrounding the combination of AI and quantum computing, he argues that the true promise of these technologies lies in their future ability to analyze complex quantum data directly, something classical computers cannot efficiently process today.

“There should be these wonderful patterns that classical computers cannot detect because there are just too many data for their memory,” says Jacob Biamonte.

The researcher also highlights promising applications in drug discovery and molecular design, where quantum AI could eventually generate and evaluate new molecular configurations before they are synthesized in a laboratory.
