This project focuses on an innovative new sub-field for the design of surfaces that incorporate friction as a functional element. The student will collaborate closely with a team of researchers and PhD students to pioneer data-driven friction models, capable of deducing frictional behavior directly from surface microgeometry. The student will establish a methodology for fabricating and validating micro-surfaces generated through a computational design pipeline, each tailored to possess specific frictional properties. A primary objective is to ensure that the fabricated surfaces match the functional and kinematic specifications provided during the design phase.  Prototypes will be produced using a FormLabs 3D printer, with subsequent validation utilizing motion capture technology.

Required knowledge

Some experience with 3D fabrication and 3D modeling is desired.
