Three Minute Thesis Competition
The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) / Ma thèse en 180 secondes (MT180) Competition is open to all students enrolled in a Master's program with thesis or a PhD program at ÉTS.
It is preferable to participate having already completed 3 or 4 semesters in your study program (ideally having completed DGA1033 for doctoral students).
Students who have already won the ÉTS internal final cannot compete in subsequent editions.


Congratulations to all the participants of the 2025 Three Minute Thesis competition.
First place goes to Sahar Mokhtari for her thesis entitled "Configuration of an Innovative Connection Between Prefabricated Composite Steel-Concrete Columns and Bridge Footings" and 2nd place to Ishman Kaur with his thesis: "Modeling Cancer Cell-derived Extracellular Vesicles (EVs) Using Synthetic Nanoparticles (liposomes)".
Competition details and important dates
ÉTS Final
The ÉTS local competition will allow the selection of a student who will represent ÉTS at the Eastern Regional 3MT Competition.
The prizes awarded range from $750 to $1000 for the local competition.
Eastern Regional 3MT Competition
The Eastern Regional will showcase the winners of local 3MT competitions held at participating institutions in Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, PEI, and Newfoundland. Each participating institution will send one student to compete, for a total of 15 competitors.
Important dates :
- Registration period from February 10 to 28, 2025;
- SARA workshops, several dates are available to practice between March 11 and 20. Check availability and register here!
- March 19, 2025, preselection (It will depend on the number of registrations).
- Thursday March 27, 2025, ÉTS Competition (Starting at noon in Pavillon E)
- Wednesday June 4, 2025, Eastern Regional 3MT Competition which will be hosted in-person by Memorial University of Newfoundland’s St. John’s campus.
- November 2025, the top two finalists from the 2025 Eastern Regional will advance to the National 3MT Showcase in Ottawa.
A challenge to overcome and prizes to win!
On your own, you will have three minutes sharp to present your research to a panel of non-specialist judges.
The challenge is to present complex research information in an engaging, accessible and compelling way.
Your presentation must be clear, concise and convincing. Also:
- You may support your oral presentation with a single PowerPoint slide (landscape format 25.4 cm x 19.05 cm), static: no animation or movement is permitted;
- No other aids are permitted;
- Your presentation must be given in English.
It is a unique opportunity to develop communication skills in your research field and draw public attention to your work... Not to mention the possibility of winning prizes valued from $750 to $1000.
