Monitoring and mitigation of geohazards in urban settings - Fully funded MSc and PhD positions
Urban densification across Canada increases mineral extraction intensity, construction debris storage requirements, and exposure to geohazards. Aggregate quarries near urban centres increase mineral production and offer cost-effective storage locations for granular waste and stockpiles. Abandoned quarries feature aging rock slopes near active infrastructure and populated areas necessitating particular geotechnical care.
ETS LG4 lab is actively recruiting graduate students at the MSc and PhD levels to tackle these challenges and develop pragmatic solutions addressing systematic monitoring, geohazard precursor detection, stability analysis for stockpiles and rock slopes, and probabilistic analysis for geohazard conditions in urban settings. Specific projects include:
- Topographical monitoring of construction and mine waste stockpiles in urban settings (MSc);
- Discrete fracture network modelling for aging rock slope rockfall hazard evaluation and mitigation (MSc, PhD);
- Probabilistic slope stability analysis of heterogeneous stockpiles.
