L3e – Laboratory for Energy and Energy Efficiency
About Us
The Laboratory for Energy and Energy Efficiency (L3e) is dedicated to promoting research in energy efficiency and in the production, distribution, and storage of energy from renewable sources. It is also interested in the practical application of these technologies in the field of construction and industrial processes.
The laboratory team fulfills this mission by facilitating exchanges and knowledge sharing, and by organizing various activities including colloquiums, conferences and visits.
Research
The laboratory is particularly interested in the following fields:
- Adapting technologies to cold climates
- Data sensors
- Energy efficiency of buildings and industrial processes
- Composite materials
- Modelling and simulation of energetic systems
- Thermal energy and electrical storage
- Systems analysis and energy control
- Solar thermal, thermodynamic, and photovoltaic systems
- Wind turbine systems
- Geothermal systems
- CO2 capture technologies

Our Team
The L3e brings together rich and diverse expertise:
Laboratory Activities
- On April 23, 2026, master's student Thomas Vrielynck defended his thesis on the "Design and characterization of radiative cooling panels for application in container farm settings".
- The L3e participated at the Table de l’innovation solaire [Solar Innovation Summit] in Varennes on April 7 and 8, 2026.
- Recent media reports have highlighted an L3e project focused on harnessing wave energy in the Îles-de-la-Madeleine. This innovative project aims to contributing to electricity generation while limiting coastal erosion (in French):
- "Les houlogénérateurs : prévenir l’érosion tout en générant de l’électricité?", Côte à côte, Ici Première.
- "L’énergie des vagues au secours des côtes des Îles", Première escale, Ici Première.
- "L’énergie des vagues au secours des Îles-de-la-Madeleine", Le Journal de Québec.
- On February 12 and 13, 2026, two L3e students participated in the annual conference of the Center for Nordic Studies (CEN). On this occasion, Guilhem Chevassus, master’s student, won third prize in the impromptu speech contest for the presentation of his research poster
