In a May 2026 op-ed published on the website of the Canadian Science Policy Centre (CSPC), Kathy Baig, Director General of the École de technologie supérieure, highlights that Canada’s Defence Industrial Strategy represents a major turning point by placing innovation at the centre of issues related to technological sovereignty, infrastructure resilience, and economic prosperity.
She emphasizes the importance of accelerating the transition from research to the industrialization of technologies, particularly in strategic fields such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, autonomous systems, and quantum technologies. According to her, the main challenge lies in Canada’s ability to more rapidly transform innovation into operational capabilities by leveraging research ecosystems, industrial partnerships, and talent development.
