Alain Abran named Professor Emeritus at ÉTS

The ÉTS Management team took advantage of the Convocation ceremony that was held at Place des Arts on January 19, 2023, to bestow upon Alain Abran the prestigious title of Professor Emeritus. More than 2,000 people were in attendance for the event and to publicly honour the Professor from the Software Engineering Department.
The title of Professor Emeritus is awarded to members of the faculty who have stood apart during their career for their exceptional contributions to teaching, to research and to the reputation and outreach of ÉTS. This describes Professor Abran to a tee. After joining ÉTS in 2001, his exemplary career perfectly reflects the spirit of innovation that drives ÉTS and its mission, which is focused on developing solutions for organizations.
Recognized as an international authority in the field of Software Engineering, Alain Abran is especially well known for his numerous and extremely significant contributions to the development of international standards for software and specialized applications. He has acquired more than 45 years of experience in the information systems and software engineering sector, including close to 20 years working in industry.
Professor Abran has demonstrated unparalleled leadership in this area, and is seen as a founder of the COSMIC (Common Software Measurement International Consortium) functional size measurement method, which has been standardized by ISO/IEC and is now used around the world. As Co-Executive Editor and Co-Editor of various versions of the Guide to the Software Engineering Body of Knowledge (known as SWEBOK), he has played a key role in this important publication, which is published under the auspices of the IEEE Computer Society.
A prolific author, Professor Abran has written more than 500 peer-reviewed articles, along with books published by Wiley, an internationally renowned published in the field of education and scientific research, among other firms. In fact, it is nearly impossible to find an article or book in the field of software project estimation that doesn’t reference his work. By way of illustration, on January 18, 2023, Google Scholar recorded close to 14,700 citations of his work, resulting in an H-index of 49! In 2021, he ranked among the Top 2% of worldwide software engineering researchers, as determined by Stanford University.
At ÉTS, there is little doubt that reputation that Professor Abran’s work has earned and the care and consideration that he brings to teaching his students has influenced many of them in their decision to pursue their higher education. In fact, no less than 45 ÉTS students have obtained their Doctorates under his direction.
Professor Abran’s expertise and the quality of his work have earned him numerous awards and distinctions. In 2001, he was honoured with the Outstanding Contribution Award from the IEEE Computer Society for his leadership and technical contributions as Co-Editor of the SWEBOK guide. In 2002, the same organization presented him with the Golden Core Member Award, and finally, Alain Abran was named a Life Senior Member of IEEE in 2020.
Some of the articles that he has written in collaboration with international colleagues have also been celebrated. Closer to home, the quality and influence of his work has been recognized by Université du Québec, which inducted him into the Circle of Excellence in 2015.
Alain Abran retired from the Software and IT Engineering Department in 2018, but he remains active in his research. On January 19, 2023, ÉTS was proud to acknowledge his exemplary career and his invaluable contribution by naming him Professor Emeritus. We are delighted to know that he is continuing his research and still helping to train highly qualified experts in his field.
