Professor Stéphane Coulombe is a video specialist with more than 25 years of experience in research and development. His research interests include video processing and systems, media adaptation, and transcoding.

Prior to being awarded the rank of professor in 2004, he worked for Nortel’s Wireless Network Group in Montreal from 1997 to 1999, and at the Nokia Research Center in Dallas (TX) in the Audiovisual Systems Laboratory from 1999 to 2004. He is the author of several scientific publications and patents, and his contributions have been incorporated into various products, including Nokia’s Multimedia Messaging Service Center (MMSC) and Vantrix’s Message Optimizer, Storefront Optimizer, Media Broadcaster and Bandwidth Optimizer.

Since 2009, Professor Coulombe has held the Vantrix Industrial Research Chair in Video Optimization.


His research activities are conducted in the field digital image and video processing. He is especially interested in the study of systems and technologies related to image and video compression, as well as adaptation (transcoding) for messaging, videoconferencing, streaming and Internet browsing applications.
