Peer Tutoring via Nimbus
The Office of Student Life (SVE), in collaboration with the ÉTS Student Association (AÉÉTS), offers a free peer tutoring service for many ÉTS courses (depending on availability and demand) that is accessible via the Nimbus application.
The mandate that tutors commit to is to provide guidance by answering your questions concerning the course material, reviewing certain concepts with you, going through exercises and directing you toward other resources, if necessary.
Please note that the tutor cannot be substituted for the instructor in any way or answer questions concerning evaluations. If the tutor’s approach to resolving a specific problem differs considerably from the approach employed by the instructor, it is your responsibility to consult the instructor.

Program Roles, Responsibilities, and Regulations
Role of the tutor
As a tutor, you play a supportive role in the academic development of students. Your mission is to accompany each learner in their search for understanding and mastery of the subjects studied. In this role, you are expected to:
Explain the material: You are expected to clarify and explain the concepts and content of the course in a way that is clear and understandable to students. Your ability to communicate complex ideas effectively will be essential in helping learners assimilate the material.
Demonstrate how to solve problems: By illustrating thought processes and problem-solving methods, you can help shed light on the steps required to solve problems.
Go through the textbook, course notes, and visual supports of the course with students: You can review the course materials with students to clarify any difficult points. Your in-depth understanding of the course and your ability to explain it in an accessible way will help learners integrate the content.
Do hands-on exercises with students: Hands-on exercises can be used to build understanding of concepts taught in class. By actively working on problems and exercises, learners can consolidate their understanding and develop their practical skills.
Responsibilities of the tutor
As a tutor, maintaining high standards of professionalism, ethics, and confidentiality is paramount to ensuring the respect and well-being of learners.
Here is what is expected of you:
Professionalism
- Avoid conflicts of interest while tutoring friends or family members.
- Avoid inappropriate behaviour that compromises your integrity.
- Provide inclusive support by treating all learners with fairness and respect, regardless of origin, identity, orientation, religion, or ability.
- Make sure learners understand the goals, terms, and limitations of tutoring.
Confidentiality of information
Do not share any personal information without a learner’s express consent (contact information, last name, first name, etc.).
Academic integrity
Promoting academic integrity means avoiding all forms of cheating, plagiarism, and academic manipulation. It is therefore essential to strictly comply with the rules of university tutoring as well as the regulations governing academic offences.
- You are authorized to provide tutoring only for the course acronyms for which you have received formal approval.
- You are prohibited from completing graded work or evaluations, identifying errors on graded work (which may constitute a form of cheating), sharing old exams, assignments, or course notes, and committing any other offence of an academic nature. Please refer to the following link for examples of offences.
Regulations specific to the Nimbus program at ÉTS
Please note the following regulations:
- Tutoring is reserved for students experiencing difficulties in the courses they are registered in for the current semester. You must therefore ensure at each meeting that the learner is registered in the course for which you are providing tutoring. By the same token, tutoring is not permitted in preparation for an equivalency or diagnostic test.
- The authorized tutoring period runs from the first week of the semester to the final exam. After the final exam, tutoring stops for the course(s) in question.
- In the event a student drops a course, tutoring stops.
- Providing tutoring to anyone other than the person who booked a session via the Nimbus app is prohibited.
As a tutor in our tutoring program, you will be compensated as follows:
Employment record: As soon as you are accepted into the program, it is your responsibility to update your social insurance number (SIN) in your student file on the MonÉTS portal and send a sample Canadian cheque to the ÉTS Finance Department at paie@etsmtl.ca. This is essential to avoid a delay in processing your compensation.
Salary and payment: Compensation is based on the student salary scale in effect at the institution. Compensation is paid every two weeks, in accordance with the ÉTS payroll schedule. There may be a longer delay before the first payment due to administrative processes.
Reporting of tutoring hours: Compensation is based exclusively on actual tutoring hours. You are responsible for correcting any discrepancies between confirmed reservations in the Nimbus app and actual tutoring hours provided. Any compensation for hours not worked must be reported, failing which there will be legal consequences. Tutoring preparation time (if any) is not added to compensation.
