The 8-month project will start in September 2025.

The Consortium de recherche et d'innovation en aérospatiale au Québec (CRIAQ) is a Quebec-based industrial research consortium (RSRI). Founded in 2002, CRIAQ actively supports Quebec's aerospace research and innovation ecosystem by providing financial support and helping to establish links between companies and college and university research centers. In all, more than 160 players are members of CRIAQ and are committed to innovation in the aerospace sector. To support this world-class sector, the ministère de l'Économie, de l'Innovation et de l'Énergie announced in May 2024 the creation of Espace Aéro, an innovation zone whose operational management has been entrusted to Aéro Montréal. At the same time, a Strategic Scientific Committee (SSC) was set up, led by CRIAQ.

The aim of this project between CRIAQ and ÉTS is to support the SSC in its mission, in particular by helping to determine and ground Espace Aéro's strategic orientations in a provincial and international context. As such, the project will involve bibliometric analyses of the scientific literature, coupled with a technology watch at both Quebec and international levels. Through this study, the project will position Quebec, its strengths and its strategic orientations in relation to those of other international aerospace clusters.

The main objective of the project is to determine the strategic axes and orientations of the Espace Aéro innovation zone. To this end, this objective has been broken down into four specific objectives to be carried out by two master's students:

  1. Identify the strategic orientations of the Quebec aerospace sector.
  2. Estimate the maturity levels of each of these axes for the Quebec aerospace sector.
  3. Identify major trends and strategic orientations on an international scale in reference clusters and hubs.
  4. Compare international trends and orientations with those of Quebec, and highlight strengths and opportunities for the Quebec aerospace sector.

Specific objectives (1) and (2) will be assigned to Master's student 1, while specific objective (3) will be assigned to Master's student 2. Finally, specific objective (4), combining the results of specific objectives (1), (2) and (3), will be shared by both Master's students.

The project will result in a report outlining the Quebec aerospace ecosystem, other international clusters and a comparison of their respective strategic orientations. This report will then confirm Espace Aéro's main strategic orientations by proposing a synthesis supported by bibliometric and technology watch data. The project has a certain strategic importance for the implementation of the innovation zone, for its axes and orientations, and its alignment along the existing ecosystem. In the longer term, and through the projects and initiatives that will flow from the strategic orientations, the aim is to position and consolidate Espace Aéro as a leader in aerospace.
