ÉTS: Building the Society of Tomorrow
École de technologie supérieure (ÉTS) is a flagship institution in the Université du Québec network dedicated to the technological and economic development of Québec. Founded in 1974, ÉTS specializes in applied engineering and trains 25% of engineers in the province. It has 11,000 students, boasts an enviable graduation rate, and ranks first among engineering faculties in Québec and second in Canada. ÉTS-trained engineers and researchers are renowned for their innovative and practical approach.
Since its inception, the School has worked extensively with industry and the business community, serving as a valuable partner to established companies and also fostering the development of promising start-ups through the ÉTS incubator Centech.
ÉTS, a societal initiative
In the early 1970s, amidst Québec’s Quiet Revolution, influential players in business and industry made a case for creating a university institution dedicated to technology education.
École de technologie supérieure was founded to meet the need for practical engineers capable of taking on strategic and technical roles.
In just five decades, ÉTS established itself as an institution of choice in Québec and on the international stage. ÉTS offer a stimulating teaching and research environment in which students are the main priority. As a key driver of innovation, we are resolutely committed to building a sustainable, just, and prosperous future for all.
Applied education: An unparalleled student experience
ÉTS delivers an outstanding academic experience, offering students every opportunity to develop their ideas and explore new perspectives as they train to become valuable contributors to society.
Students at every level learn to conduct high-level applied research, collaborating with industry to gain unique expertise sought after by businesses and organizations and acquiring the skills they need should they decide to embark on their own entrepreneurial journey.
The ÉTS promise is to provide innovative options in education, whether through co-op programs, more lab and practical work than in any other engineering program in Québec, or involvement in one of our many internationally recognized student clubs. Students are encouraged to explore their full potential and become the inspiring engineers our society will need moving forward.
A special link with industry
At ÉTS, 60% of research is carried out in collaboration with local, national, and international organizations and businesses. We are proud to work with the more than 1,200 companies that offer internships to the student community every year, but that also look to ÉTS faculty for help in developing industrial applications.
Advanced research and technology transfer
ÉTS ranks fourth among Canadian universities for research intensity.
Thanks to our close relationships with industry and granting agencies, ÉTS research professors conduct a multitude of activities at leading-edge research laboratories, chairs, and groups.
In doing so, they contribute to scientific progress and help improve Québec’s productivity and competitiveness while also playing a crucial role in training a highly skilled workforce.
Entrepreneurship: Innovating to meet tomorrow’s challenges
Entrepreneurship is central to the ÉTS mission. We firmly believe that new ideas are essential to meeting the emerging needs of a society in a constant state of change.
ÉTS facilitates the creation of start-ups, notably through Centech, which is recognized as one of the 10 most successful university incubators in the world. From concept to commercialization, Centech supports high-potential tech companies and projects through an exciting collaborative ecosystem whose members share a common passion for their role.
A globally oriented institution
The internationalization of training and research activities and the development of industrial relations abroad are priorities for ÉTS.
We currently have more than 100 international partnerships that contribute significantly to Québec’s economic development. We also take pride in our innovative student mobility models, our growing population of international graduate students, our thriving research programs, our scientific outreach, and our technology transfers with global impact.
