MIMO Software Defined Avionics Architecture for Communication, Navigation and Surveillance

The Ph.D. student will work on the NSERC/CRIAQ CRD project entitled “Next Generation SDR Avionics for Communication, Navigation and Surveillance” with the industrial partners as Thales Canada, ACSS, SII Canada and Bombardier.

The objective of this Ph.D. thesis is to investigate the MIMO software defined avionics architecture capable to provide a universal platform for communication, navigation and surveillance, while ensuring systems interoperability and interferences mitigation with new developed algorithms and theoretical metrics on a full spectrum. The avionics modules implemented in his/her project will be VOR, ILS, ADS-B in/out, DME and TACAN. The challenge consists of implementing several avionic function modules in a single box by using software architecture fully independent from the hardware platform. This implies the use of the same hardware resources (i.e., single clock, ADC, RF front-end, etc.) for all avionic software modules with continuous upgraded capabilities.
