As new partners, Numana and the Centre interdisciplinaire de recherche et d’opérationnalisation du développement durable (CIRODD) have joined GeSI’s Digital with Purpose movement, which aims to reduce the negative impacts of information and communication technologies (ICT) on the environment and accelerate the energy transition.

The movement, which was launched on December 2 at the Web Summit forum, will help meet the targets set by the Paris Agreement and the United Nations’ (UN) sustainable development goals. It brings together public and private partners as well as non-profit organizations with the ambition to create business value with more environmentally friendly ICT.

Demonstrating GHG reduction through concrete projects

More concretely, the three partners plan to launch research and development (R&D) projects aimed at demonstrating that it is possible to reduce the ecological footprint of ICTs. These projects will include a coordinated approach with key players to calculate the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated by ICTs, taking into account when and where these ICTs are used. Another project will quantify the GHG reduction benefits of different actors in the supply chain of major telecom operators.

Case studies will also be created. They will be based on the CIRODD’s sustainable innovation guidelines, the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Digital with Purpose platform. Finally, the creation of a provincial and municipal ecosystem will bring together projects from universities and R&D institutions to facilitate their funding.

The Digital with Purpose movement

All the organizations that have joined the global Digital with Purpose movement will work together to establish a roadmap to meet the challenges of sustainable development. Leaders of major corporations will present a collective commitment on June 1, 2021 at the next Web Summit forum.

“We are pleased to join forces with GeSI and the CIRODD in the Digital with Purpose movement,” said François Borrelli, President and CEO of Numana.

“In Quebec, we have all the expertise and talent needed to design greener and more sustainable ICTs,” said Mohamed Cheriet, professor and researcher at the École de technologie supérieure (ÉTS) and General Manager of the CIRODD.

The Government of Quebec has reiterated its commitment to fight climate change as part of the 2030 Plan for a Green Economy. The development of clean technologies as well as the development of a green digital strategy will make it possible to achieve these objectives.

About Numana

Numana’s objective is to mobilize and catalyze technology innovation ecosystems to implement concrete strategies to support the sector in its innovations and growth in order to foster collaboration (“coopetition”) and the influence of the industry that creates more than 175,000 jobs in Quebec.

The CIRODD’s goal is to contribute to accelerating the sustainable and intelligent transformation of Quebec society through the implementation of sustainable innovation mechanisms in a transdisciplinary manner. To achieve this, it intends to put in place collaborative approaches, tools and methods that will take advantage of technological advances, while integrating the needs, goals and aspirations of stakeholders in the field.

Since May 2019, the CIRODD has been directed by Professor Mohamed Cheriet, while the ÉTS is the managing institution until 2026. Today, the CIRODD has 95 researchers from 14 universities and four CEGEPs and colleges. A world-class centre of expertise, the CIRODD is a member of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN). For more information: www.cirodd.org.
