Introduction of Béluga

ÉTS houses the new Calcul Québec supercomputer

Friday, April 26, 2019

Calcul Québec’s Béluga, a high-performance supercomputer that can process data 300,000 as fast as a PC, with 67,000 times the storage capacity, was introduced on Friday, April 26. This breakthrough will boost research performance across Canada.

That is the power that Calcul Québec is making available to all researchers in Québec and Canada. This supercomputer is now the main high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure in the province.

As pointed out by Charles Despins, Director of Research at ÉTS: "In terms of our universities, which are faced with a sometimes difficult economic reality, the commissioning of Béluga and the pooling of existing infrastructure assets into a single hyper-powerful machine represents an incredible resource from which we will all benefit in using it to its maximum capacity".

Functional since the beginning of April, Béluga is physically hosted at ÉTS. It is currently the most powerful  of Compute Canada supercomputers in terms of graphics processing and one of the fastest supercomputers in the country.
