Canada Graduate Scholarships
NSERC offers scholarships to high calibre students enrolled in a Master’s program with thesis or a doctoral degree in the natural sciences or engineering.
Plan to submit an application one year in advance:
The current competition is open to students who wish to obtain financing beginning summer 2024, fall 2024 or winter 2025.
Amount and duration
At the Master’s level:
- (CGS M): $17,500 / year (max. 1 year)
At the Doctoral level:
- (PGS D): $21,000 / year (max. 3 years)
- (CGS D): $35,000 / year (max. 3 years)
Eligibility criteria
- Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident;
- Have obtained, in each of your last two years of studies, a cumulative average of 3.7/4.3 or A- (full-time equivalent);
- Demonstrate the intention to undertake or to continue, in the year following the competition, full-time studies and research at the master’s or doctoral level in one of the fields of the Natural Sciences and Engineering supported by NSERC.

Selection criteria
At the Master’s level:
- Academic excellence, research potential, interpersonal relations characteristics and skills.
At the Doctoral level:
- Academic excellence, research skills or potential, communication skills and leadership, interpersonal skills.
Additional information:
- The (internal) applications review committee is a multi-departmental committee composed of three ÉTS professors;
- The Dean of Studies ensures that there is no research association with the candidates. Each member makes an individual evaluation of the application files using the evaluation grid provided by the Dean of Studies Office;
- The Dean’s office then presents a compilation of evaluations at a meeting of the review committee. The deliberations lead to the nomination of recipients (for CGS M) or the recommendation of applicants to NSERC (for PGS and CGS D) based on the quota that NSERC assigns to ÉTS.
Documents required
For an application for a master's scholarship:
- Applicants must complete and submit their application for a master's scholarship through the NSERC research portal. See the instructions on the NSERC website.
- Before submitting your application, ask your director (actual or future) to go over the section titled " Outline of proposed research " for a last revsion.
For an application for a doctorate scholarship:
- Form 201 and attachments (documents uploaded) / Read the instructions on the NSERC website;
- Official transcripts of all university studies;
- Two letters of recommendation (reports on the candidate).
