Do Research Abroad

Are you a graduate student? How would you like to establish a network of contacts abroad and develop your intercultural skills by visiting another country and carrying out a research project? You might even be eligible for a grant!

What are the Admission Criteria?

To be eligible for a research project abroad, you must: 

  • Be enrolled full-time at ÉTS in a master's or doctoral program;
  • Have earned 9 credits in your program of studies before your departure;
  • Have an average of 3.0 or more;
  • Have at least 9 credits of research to earn during your time abroad.
  • The research project must last at least 2 months.

When Should You Apply?

You must submit your application package before November 30, at the Bureau du recrutement et de la coordination internationale (BRÉCI), the recruitment and international coordination office, room A-3700. 

  • If you are accepted, you must start your research project between January and December of the following year. 
  • Any application filed after the deadline date may be taken into account if funds are still available at the time of filing.  

Candidates will receive the Selection Committee’s decision in December.

How Do You Apply?

First, you must fill out an online form through the MoveON software. To obtain a link to this form, you must write to

To access this form, you will then need to enter: 

  • Your user name = your ÉTS Universal Access code
  • Your password = PIN that you use at ÉTS.

After filling out the form, you must submit the following documents to the BRÉCI before November 30

  • A copy of your birth certificate or your passport;
  • Your curriculum vitae;
  • A letter of interest (one page);
  • A letter of invitation from the host institution or research laboratory, as applicable;
  • A letter of support from the research or program director to ÉTS, addressed to the BRÉCI. The letter must contain:
    • the director’s approval for the project;
    • the dates of the trip;
    • the number of credits that will be validated upon your return.

You must be registered full-time throughout your time abroad.

How Can You Obtain a Grant?

You may obtain a grant of approximately $750 per month, for a minimum stay of two months, and a maximum stay of eight months ($6,000).  This grant may not be combined with MITACS grants.

If you have applied for a MITACS grant, the first payment of your ÉTS bursary will be made at the earliest in February, after the announcement of the MITACS recipients. 

Please note it is impossible to combine course and research credits during your period of research abroad.
