Should we restore or maintain, modernize or replace our infrastructures?

A large part of today’s urban infrastructures having been built in the 1960’s, their degradation represents a vast challenge for Québec municipalities and this opens the way for multiple interventions. The complexity of existing systems requires special consideration before implementing solutions: is it better to restore or maintain the condition of existing infrastructures, or improve, modernize or replace them? Would it be better to build new infrastructure that’s more environmentally friendly? With the ÉTS Master's in urban infrastructure management, you will be able to support and guide municipalities to evolve their urban infrastructures in an effective manner.

What will you learn in the Master’s program?

Thanks to this master's program, you will be equipped with the tools to manage urban infrastructures, in a perspective of sustainable development. You will also enrich your knowledge of the technical and economic considerations of urban planning and development, rainfall management and urban transportation.

More specifically, this graduate program will help you to: 

  • Acquire advanced knowledge in the management of urban projects and systems, asset management, information and decision support technologies in the urban milieu, water management and transportation management; 
  • Analyze the technical, economic, social and environmental issues of a complex project;
  • Design both corrective and preventive solutions;
  • Validate the compliance of a solution and its implementation in relation to municipalities’ requirements and long-term issues.
     

What degrees provide admission to the program?

To be eligible for this master's program, you must hold a bachelor degree or the equivalent in engineering, urban planning, applied sciences or in commerce in an appropriate field.

Research related to various aspects of today's urban infrastructures

Many ÉTS professors from various departments are interested in varying degrees in urban infrastructure. For example, some are studying infrastructures and rehabilitation, while others are interested in pavements and bituminous materials, infrastructure auscultation and the impact of climate change. As 60% of their research mandates are carried out in partnership with industry, these professors are able to deal with real-world issues.

This Master's program has just one profile, the project profile. It totals 45 credits, and includes an application project or business initiative (15 credits), a business project (9 credits) or a technical project (6 credits), complemented by 30, 36 or 39 credits of courses.

Professional Perspectives in Urban Infrastructures Engineering

According to the Canadian Construction Association, overall losses relating to infrastructures nationally are estimated to be more than $900 billion. As for the market for rehabilitation of urban infrastructures, it has undergone unprecedented growth over the last few years. This market, which represented only 25 per cent of the overall volume of construction in North America in the 1990s, now accounts for more than 60% of the market.  Everything points to this percentage increasing in coming years, due to aging of existing infrastructures. 

Graduates of the master's in urban infrastructures engineering can hold a wide variety of positions in the private, public and parapublic sectors. Among these employers are:

  • Metropolitan communities;
  • MRC’s and counties;
  • Provincial and federal ministries;
