To be able to innovate, you not only need good ideas, but you need to know how to sell them. And to start a business, it’s not always enough to have a good idea: knowledge of management and market strategies are often needed to develop a viable business model.  In the ÉTS Master in Engineering with a Concentration in Innovation Management, you will develop all these skills, and many more!

What will you learn in the Master’s program?

The progression of the Master’s in Innovation Management was designed so that, once you have your diploma in hand, you’ll be able to: 

  • Manage innovation projects;

In addition, the methodology you acquired in your studies will be applicable in many different contexts, such as large firms, SMBs, emerging SMBs, laboratories, universities, government agencies, etc.

Applied Research in Innovation Management at ÉTS

The Numerix research lab at ÉTS specializes in organizational engineering. One of its research axes addresses innovation in the design of products and services, as well as the methodology of creative engineering and social and organizational innovation. 

In this laboratory, a dozen professors, supported by research professionals and graduate students, are studying innovation not only in the manufacturing field, but also in aerospace, transport, logistics and finance. 

What’s the Difference between the Project Profile and the Research Profile?

Our master's program in innovation engineering management includes two profiles: one with a thesis and the other with a project. 

The thesis profile is focused on research and leads to the degree of Master of Applied Science (M.A.Sc.).

As for the project profile, it will allow you to specialize in a particular area of innovation engineering. Within this profile, which leads to the degree of Master in Engineering (M. Eng.), you can also choose to carry out an application project or a business startup project. 

Master's Degree in Innovation Engineering with Thesis (research profile)

The thesis program totals 45 credits, including 30 assigned to a research project. In the framework of this project, you will need to select a notion seen in your courses, transpose it to a concrete case, then propose solutions. For example:  

  • Improve the business model of an SMB or establish an intellectual property process therein; 
  • Capitalize on your knowledge to innovate in the field of banking; 
  • Create and develop work spaces to support open innovation in the hospital milieu;
  • Etc.

Master's degree in innovation engineering with project (project profile)

Under the 45-credit project profile, you will carry out an application project that, depending on the case, will be worth 6, 15 or 18 credits. Your application project will be to apply a concept learned in your courses to a specific case.  For example:  

  • How to implement a system of innovation management in a specific company;
  • How to improve the creativity of a company’s employees. 

You may also use your project to start a business.

Master of Applied Science (M.A.Sc.)

Program Objectives

The objective is to train engineers, managers, R&D professionals, entrepreneurs and technology transfer officers and enable them to manage technological innovation to create commercial successes.

This unique educational program deals with the strategic management of innovation and technological change in a context of globalization. The faculty are experts coming mainly from industry and their pedagogical approach promotes the development and transfer of innovation management tools.

Defining an innovation as an invention destined for commercialization, this program prepares students to manage innovation projects, startup technological businesses and launch new products and processes and to transfer technology. It provides them with essential basic training in the management of product and process innovation, and the methodology required to apply it at a state-of-the-art level and adapt it to various contexts: large corporations, manufacturing and emerging SMBs, laboratories and universities and government agencies that support innovation. In addition, it includes a final project that gives the student an opportunity to synthesize all the knowledge acquired.

Admission Requirements

Hold a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in engineering, applied science or a related field, with a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 (out of 4.3) or equivalent;

or have acquired the required knowledge, appropriate training and experience that is deemed to be relevant.

A candidate who is deemed to be inadequately prepared may be required to take upgrading courses or a preparatory course.

The candidate can be admitted on the basis of sufficient knowledge of English. In addition to the requirements of the program, the candidate must also successfully complete an out-of-program French course, appropriate to his or her level, to obtain a diploma.

Candidates admitted on the basis of English must also provide proof that a faculty member has agreed to act as their thesis supervisor.

  • 1 mandatory activity (3 credits)
  • 3 or 4 optional activities (totalling at least 12 credits)
  • 1 thesis (30 credits)

If you choose to take courses at a partner university, you must obtain prior approval from your supervisor.

The student must successfully complete the following activity near the end of the program (30 credits):

Career Prospects

Professional Perspectives in Innovation Engineering

In a time of globalization and technological upheaval, all companies must innovate if they want to survive. In addition, they must do it better, more quickly and at lower cost. However, a study by the Business Development Bank of Canada indicates that only one quarter of Canadian SMBs planned to invest in research and development in 2016.

Professionals with expertise in innovation management will be well equipped to encourage Canadian businesses to take this path… unless they choose to develop markets others have neglected!

Graduates with a master of innovation engineering can find work in many varied sectors, such as:

They can hold the following positions: 

  • Manager of Innovation;
  • Head of technology transfer;

Some masters’ graduates, notably those with an M.A.Sc., choose to continue into doctoral studies or make a career within a university or a college.
