Arvin and Aida Memorial Scholarship
One year ago, ÉTS suffered the tragic loss of two Iranian graduatesFriday, January 8, 2021
Today marks one year since the ÉTS community was shaken upon learning of the death of Doctoral students Aida Farzaneh, who was also an Instructor, and Arvin Morattab, following the crash of a Ukraine International Airlines flight in Iran. The young graduates had made a home for themselves in Québec, and they both had a very bright future ahead of them.
The ÉTS community held a memorial ceremony to honour the two, and in cooperation with other universities across Canada, observed a moment of silence in memory of all those who lost their lives in the tragic incident.
Since that time, the families of the two young students have shown great generosity in creating the Arvin and Aida Memorial Scholarship as a way to honour and perpetuate their memory. The $2,000 Scholarship is awarded annually to provide financial support for an international student in a Master with Thesis program. ÉTS has committed to matching any amounts received in commemoration of the deep roots that Arvin and Aida had forged here. There is no doubt that the generosity demonstrated by the families of these graduates will have a long-term positive effect on the entire ÉTS community.
The name of the first recipient of this Scholarship will be announced in the spring of 2021. Please take a moment today, on this first anniversary of the tragedy, to remember Arvin and Aida and to uplift the members of their families.
