Renewal of the Industrial Research Chair in Forming Technologies of High Strength Alloys

Wednesday, October 17, 2018

ÉTS is proud to announce the renewal of the Industrial Research Chair in Forming Technologies of High Strength Alloys (CM2P), which has been extended for a second five-year cycle. On October 10, the Chair holder, Professor Mohammad Jahazi, and his team, along with numerous collaborators and partners of the Chair, spent the evening of the inauguration discussing two main subjects: the increased momentum that this research has generated for industry and the benefits that ÉTS has reaped thanks to this successful joint effort between university and industry.

Solid base

The exclusive industrial partner of the Chair is Finkl Steel, the largest producer of high-strength forged steel in Canada. Right from the beginning, the research activities of the Chair have focused on the specific needs of the company’s plant in Sorel (formerly Sorel Forge, acquired by Finkl Steel in 2016). A technology roadmap was created, allowing for identification of the “scientific fields of research on which to focus in order to propose solutions with a solid scientific base and allow for the development of new products or new processes aimed at maintaining Finkl Steel’s leadership position on the world market”, Professor Jahazi explains.

The limits of experience

Experience is useful, but it has its limits, which depend on the means available to the human beings involved to enhance their ability to observe and understand. This is where the CM2P (Comprehension of interactions between Materials–Processes-Properties) Chair comes in, and where ÉTS allows industry to advance by providing the necessary tools for increasing its knowledge of the microscopic structure and specific characteristics of thermal phenomena. According to Professor Jahazi, ÉTS benefits by developing new skills thanks to “the acquisition of key pieces of equipment, some of which do not exist elsewhere in Canada”.
