Description
According to the schedule, this Master’s student will be in charge of the following tasks:
1)    State-of-the-art review;
2)    System architecture design;
3)    hardware and development tool selection;
4)    Interface definition;
5)    Implementation of Image acquisition and processing system(IAPS);
6)    Validation of IAPS module in lab environment
7)    Final integration of real-time prototypes
8)    Validation of IAPS module in real UAV system
 The general objective of the Master’s research project will be to research and implement real-time image acquisition and processing system (IASP) for autonomous UAV. As an important unit for sensoring functionality of autonomous UAV, the IASP system will build reliable communication with HD camera, acquire highly sampled image data and exact the required information for navigation and collision avoidance, furthermore improve the flight safety and autonomy. Several theoretical and technical aspects will be addressed, such as the computer vision, embedded system and software development.
For this purpose, the student will incorporate to the research team closely to fulfill the development and validation work. The student will firstly review the state-of-the art in the image processing field, analysis the challenge and key technology, then propose a feasible technical solution. After that, the student will design the system architecture to fulfill each functional requirement, select the hardware and development tool, then cooperate with industry and other university partners to define the interface including hardware and software protocols. Based on that, the student will do the development work on the image acquisition and processing software module, to ensure the image output for other part of the system, such as UAV position’s consolidation, object-tracking, obstacle detection and hand gestures recognition. Finally, an onboard-embedded system prototype including hardware and software will be delivered.
